VAA History
This page, on the history part of VAA, has been outlined not through recorded documentation of the chain of events, but has rather been an outcome of a thorough retrospect from the minds and memory of Binod Rijal and Chakra Tamang. There were too many events that VAA, as an entity, executed but weren't unfortunately documented.
Therefore, to extract something from such yonder, to exhume the fossilized past that has remained nowhere else but in the blurry fringes of our mind has been both enjoyable and excruciating. We will seek and sort out, to the best of our ability, to define those moments. In doing so, we may run off few precious forgotten moments that could have lapsed out of our mind. Also please note that we have not mentioned any names for the reason of our inability to remember who was what fifteen years ago.
Therefore, please feel free to contact us and we will happily include what we may have missed. Once again, please write to us and help us make this page more vivid and accurate.
Sincerely,
Binod Rijal and Chakra Tamang
First Batch.
HISTORY OF VIJAYPUR ALUMINI ASSOCIATON
In the year 1990, Vijaypur Boarding High School bid farewell to its first batch.
The school didnn't have a career counselor at the time. That left many of us to make hard choices about what we were to do and where we would end up in ten or twenty years. We had pretty much a small number of choices ahead of us: join Science, join commerce, join Arts or get recruited in the British Army. We saw nothing but clouds in our minds.
Amidst such turmoil and brouhaha, one man had a different plan for us. Mr. Damodar Upadhaya, a mathematic teacher and a man who will never cease to live in the minds and memory of many Vijaypur Alumni, came up with a million dollar plan of founding an organization that would help unite all the out-going batches for many years to come. The precept later transmuted into what is now commonly known as VAA.
We took his plan with zest and fervor because we thought it would provide us the impetus for our future undertakings. Few months down the road and we started organizing meetings. Chakra Tamang from the first batch got designated as the founder president and Binod Rijal took the office of Secretary General. The first founding committee spent most of its time garnering support and promoting the association to the new members.
Later on, the fresh SLC-passers from the school started joining VAA. Many of them were very passionate workers and few years down the road VAA was replete with talented people.
Vijaypur Alumni Association was initially called Vijaypur Youth Association. The name later changed to the present layout. In the course of time, VAA conducted several social activities in Dharan. Meanwhile, it also volunteered in maneuvering school's annual cultural program by providing instruments and other logistics to the school admin.
That aside, the VAA had many financial bottlenecks. We were at times so broke that we went from house to house selling raffle tickets and organizing "Deusi-Bhailo" to collect funds for programs.
The school had provided an office where we could run our meetings and could have space to assemble. Few times, we remember going to the administration of the school and requesting for a custodian who could keep track of events and the whereabouts of the alumni. The administration turned down the request.
In later years, VAA also began publishing VERITAS, a newsletter that depicted the voice of young writers within the organization. Meanwhile, VAA began organizing annual Grand Get-Together for the members. We remember it being a grand success all the time. There were games, cultural programs and formal sessions where the faculty from VBHS was also invited.
That aside, VAA managed to organize programs like Cricket Competition, Quiz contests, football tournaments, oratory to name a few.
To be continued....
We are trying to contact the erstwhile presidents of VAA so that we can add up more pages to the history folio. We are constantly looking forward to updating this page. Meanwhile, please write to us and let us know if you have a say.
Personal Notes from us:
To us, VAA has been one wonderful journey that became an endowment in our lives. We learned many things in our quest of founding this organization. In the meantime, we have no clue about the status quo of VAA in Dharan. We would appreciate if anyone from Vijaypur School would let us know if there is any VAA activity going on in Dharan.
Thank you
Binod and Chakra
